WHO ARE THE MAYANGNA PEOPLE

The Mayangna (pronounced my-YAG-NA) are an indigenous people, with a population of approximately 15,000, who live in the dense rainforests of the Atlantic coast of Honduras and Nicaragua. Most villages can only be reached by river or hiking. Because of the remoteness of the Mayangna villages, permission must be granted by the tribal authorities before entering their territories. The Mayangna are subsistence farmers, living a extremely poor lifestyle. Health and education services are almost none existence. Their animistic beliefs affect their concept of the spirit world and reliance on Sukias (witchdoctor) to provide protection from evil spirits. Estimates show that less than 2% percent of the Mayangna are evangelical Christians. Only portions of the Scripture have been adequately translated into the Mayangna.
