Miskito Leadership is key to the church planting movement. Miskito pastors/leaders take the lead in evangelism, discipleship, church planting and leadership training. Pastors with experience are call "Reverends", or in Miskito "Parsan nani." As a ordained pastor, they are put in charge of younger pastors and group of churches. The pastor/leader is expected to be totally responsible for the growth and health of the work in his region. He supervises the younger pastors, trouble shoots problems in the congregations, and looks for ways to start new works. Miskito pastors receive no salary or pay. They plant beans and rice just like everyone else in their village. Of course, church members will help the pastor from time to time with firewood or something from their farm. As tempting as it would be to pay Miskito pastors form outside the community, it would be detrimental to the church. It has been proved that outside resources stymie local initiative and hinder church growth. Pastors must be responsible to their local church and not outside funding. Of course there are ways to help pastors, by providing bicycles or outboard motors for transportation, which do not create dependency. Miskito pastors need our respect, support, and encouragement.
